The Pendulator

The pendulator is a spill-resistant, multi-purpose pivoting cup holder. This spill resistant cup holder has a unique multi-purpose design and can be easily adapted to many uses. The Pendulator is available as a kit that includes the hardware necessary for installation for many applications. The kit includes the cup holder, nuts and bolts, screws, and attachments that will allow a variety of installations. A strip of double side tape is provided for those users who prefer a simpler means of attachment. Although use of the hardware is strongly recommended the included double sided tape is a convenience to the user. The use of the tape as opposed to the hardware is left to the judgement of the user.

Multiple uses of the Pendulator

The Pendulator can be used in many applications that may include the following.

Mounted on pull behind golf carts the Pendulator provides a convenient place to keep the beverage container while playing golf and stores between the wheels for easy transport. Mounted on the side of a tool box lid the Pendulator can swing out of the way when you open the top. The Pendulator keeps the beverage container off of the work surface thus preventing spills on a workbench or roll-away tool box. Users of wheelchairs or scooters can install a unit under the armrest and have it swing out of the way when they get in or out of the chair. Anyone who pushes a baby carrage can mount a unit on the handle and not worry about finding a place to put the container when the infant becomes fussy. Individuals who cut the lawn can install a unit on a walk-behind or riding lawn mower. Having a beverage while cutting the lawn on a hot day at some distance from the home is very convenient. The Pendulator is easily adapted onto heavy equipment such as dozers and earth moving equipment, along with sporting goods or other transportable items. Many more uses are possible which leaves the application up to the needs of the consumer. Many types of containers fit into the Pendulator, including a variety of bottles, cans, cups, travel mugs and water bottles.

The Story Behind The Pendulator

While golfing with some friends on a hot afternoon I was on the second hole of a golf course and dropped my beverage container spilling my iced tea onto the fairway. Needless to say I was the only one drinking iced tea that day and none of my friends had another one to give me. We were quite a distance away from the clubhouse and I went the rest of the round without anything to drink. I was not a happy golfer and despite offers of other beverages I spent a lot of time thinking about how to prevent this from happening again. During the rest of the round and all the way home I continued thinking about a solution to my problem. By the time I drove into my driveway the idea was so vivid in my mind that I went to a hardware store and bought an end cap for a plastic pipe and went home and made a swinging cup holder out of wood and the plastic end cap.

Some time that afternoon I had finished making the swinging cup holder and installed it on my golf cart. My brother had just driven into the driveway as I was completing my handy work. I felt proud of myself and showed off my new little invention. I can never forget the smile on his face when he told me that he actually liked my idea and that I should get a patent. I knew that he was serious because he rarely smiles. After doing some research I filed for the patent in January 1999 and received my patent in December 2001.
